Spotify said on Monday that it would cut nearly a fifth of its work force, at least the third round of layoffs this year, as it has struggled to become consistently profitable after spending aggressively to expand beyond music streaming into areas such as podcasting. “Economic growth has slowed dramatically and capital has become more expensive,” Mr. Ek said. “Despite our efforts to reduce costs this past year, our cost structure for where we need to be is still too big,” Mr. Ek added. Despite being the largest music streaming platform, Spotify has long struggled to be profitable because of the terms of licensing deals it has with record labels and music publishers. It struck expensive deals with well-known figures such as former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama, as well as Prince Harry and wife, Meghan.

Some two decades after leaving the White House, Rosalynn Carter reflected on the criticism she generated for expanding the role of a first lady. “The first lady role has changed,” she observed. Mrs. Carter pushed the boundaries that had constrained most of her predecessors. Nancy Reagan recalled in her memoir a “chill in her manner” when Mrs. Carter showed her around the White House following the 1980 election when Ronald Reagan defeated Mr. Carter. Dr. Biden “isn’t an activist first lady” in the way that Mrs. Carter was, said Mr. LaRosa, the former aide to the current first lady.

In any other circumstance it would have been a shocking sight. Not only that, but she created a situation in which Mrs. Trump was seated right next to Michelle Obama. Mrs. Trump has eschewed almost every major event since leaving the White House in January 2021, including her husband’s several court appearances (the rare exception being his November 2022 announcement that he was once again running for president). But on Tuesday, as is custom, she joined the three other living former first ladies — Mrs. Obama, Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush — as well as Jill Biden, the current first lady, at the Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church in Atlanta, for Mrs. Carter’s memorial service. “Rosalynn Carter would be so pleased she brought all of you together on this day,” the journalist Judy Woodruff said.

Jimmy Carter’s participation in the events has been a day-by-day question; he is 10 months into home hospice care. Rosalynn Carter has been praised for a half-century of advocacy for better mental health care in America and reducing stigma attached to mental illness. Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter confirmed they voted in the 2016 Georgia Democratic presidential primary for Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton. Jimmy Carter also rankled some of his successors with criticism of their foreign and military policy, especially George W. Bush’s 2003 invasion of Iraq. NEW YORK (AP) — Colman Domingo has a commanding physical presence, an expressive face and soulful eyes. His performance in George C. Wolfe's “Rustin" — Domingo's first time atop the call sheet — has made the 53-year-old journeyman actor a favorite for a best actor Oscar nomination. Though celebrated — Colman shared in an Obie award for ensemble — once the play closed, Domingo found himself bartending again. “I would be talking with Mark Rickler the production designer, ‘Oh, Colman could do that.’ Part of my brain would go, ‘Oh, Colman could do that,’' recalls Wolfe. “And she clutches her heart and says, ‘Oh, Colman.’ And then we started hiking again.”___Follow AP Film Writer Jake Coyle at: http://twitter.com/jakecoyleAP

Spotify is quietly looking for a new ad agency to handle its media planning and buying as it takes steps to broaden its business beyond music and podcasts and push further into performance marketing. Spotify shared a statement saying: "Today, UM is Spotify's agency of record. In October, Spotify posted an operating profit, its first since 2021, as user and advertising growth along with price hikes boosted results. CNN —Former President Donald Trump continued his attacks on special counsel Jack Smith on Saturday, including a reference to Smith’s family, at a rally in Claremont, New Hampshire. Referring to the alleged ill -will Smith and his family have for Trump, the former president said Smith is “about at 10” and his family is “about a 15 on a scale of 10.”Some of Trump’s attacks against Smith stem from the activities of his wife, filmmaker Katy Chevigny. I just want to do what’s right for the country,” Trump told the crowd. Trump quickly appealed and sought to have the gag order paused while the appeal unfolded. A federal appeals court later temporarily froze the limited gag order, allowing him to again speak freely with criticism of possible witnesses in the case.

WASHINGTON (AP) — When President Joe Biden meets Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Wednesday, there will be no such thing as a small detail. Biden and Xi will meet while both attend next week's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco, but even basic information has remained closely guarded. That recalls Biden's nearly three-hour meeting with Xi before the start of last year’s G-20 summit in Bali. The Chinese attach importance to the location, which this time may be more like Sunnylands than Anchorage, where top U.S. and Chinese officials held rather tense 2021 talks. On the day of publication, Spears posted on Instagram that her book had become “the highest selling celebrity memoir in history.” It is not, so far, even the highest selling memoir of 2023. Several producers, agents, and other dealmakers also weighed in for this story about the content market and what the streamers are looking for. In short, broadcast network-type shows that will grab broad viewership are the top priority for Netflix and all its competitors. Netflix wants another 'Squid Game' and more true crime, but 'nothing too political'"Squid Game." And for its version of Hulu's "The Bear," it wants a series set in a fast-paced world, but not a restaurant. In unscripted and non-fiction programming, per both documents and Insider's sources, true crime remains a big area of focus for series as well as films.

This faux-leather jacket is made by bacteria

“A yellow leather jacket” might not be your first answer, but it’s exactly what came out of a collaboration between Danish fashion brand Ganni and Mexican biomaterials company Polybion. “We were impressed by the fact that a lot of people love the jacket because the material did not resemble leather,” said Alexis Gómez-Ortigoza, Polybion’s co-founder. “We isolated our first bacteria from that drink.”Kombucha is an increasingly popular fermented tea drink, and the bacterial biomass used to make the jacket, called Celium, comes from that jar. “We feed the bacteria with fruit waste, which is extremely abundant here in central Mexico,” said Gómez-Ortigoza. Although it shares some similarities with leather, Celium is an organic material that's meant to have its own look and feel.
